Public Participation and Engagement for Senior Leaders

Course Description

P2/Engagement for Senior Leaders looks at P2/engagement from the perspective of those in leadership and decision-making roles. It explores what makes P2/engagement meaningful; standards of practice; and the unique and critical role that senior leaders play in building a positive culture of P2/engagement that contributes to improved results, credibility and performance.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and consider how external and internal factors are impacting P2 and engagement
  2. Define P2/engagement as well as related terms and what makes it unique, and consider the role of leaders in P2/engagement
  3. Identify what makes P2/engagement meaningful, and reflect on the impacts and results of collaboration and connection
  4. Explore the critical role of leaders in building trust, working with power and influence and committing to the purpose of engagement and level of influence, through the lens of the spectrum and the Profiles of Engagement model
  5. Explore the Practice Framework to identify the role of leaders in building engagement culture and in working with community and stakeholders
  6. Explore the role of power and influence in challenging engagement contexts, and their impacts on our work and the perception of our organization
  7. Identify the steps on the development continuum for a culture of P2/engagement and assess organisation(s) against those steps; evidence and measures of how well we are doing
  8. Discover the role of the leader in leading culture change in communities and organizations, and practice skills and knowledge

Target Audience

Senior Leaders are:
Management and Executive levels of an organization where decisions are made related to the whole of an organization and where accountability and responsibility rests. This can include the Executive team, Chief and Council, elected officials or senior leadership of specific organizational departments.

This course is NOT for those who:

  • Plan, design or implement P2/engagement plans as primary activities in their work
  • Are leading or actively involved in P2/engagement

Public Participation and Engagement for Allied Professionals

Course Description

P2/Engagement for Allied Professionals looks at the perspective of those working in other professions who may be responsible for ensuring that P2/engagement is conducted, or who provide support or oversight to P2/engagement processes. It explores the underpinning models and frameworks of public participation and engagement practice as defined by the IAP2 community, specifically in terms of what it is, who is involved, standards of practice, why it is important to be practiced ethically and effectively and the unique and critical role that allied professionals serve.

  • Reflect on and apply ethical leadership actions and abilities to challenging engagement situations
  • Apply the Profiles of Engagement model to P2/engagement and explore organization led and community led engagement and how that impacts the engagement process
  • Apply the IAP2 spectrum to challenging P2/engagement situations and practice
  • Explore the Practice Framework as a tool for effective planning and process
  • Reflect on and apply the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion and explore the concept of intercultural engagement
  • Explore the role of power and influence in challenging engagement contexts and its impacts to our work.

Target Audience

Allied Professional are those in professions other than P2/engagement where P2/engagement is not their sole or primary responsibility and who may be:

  • Responsible for ensuring P2/engagement is conducted
  • Required to do P2/engagement based on organizational or legal requirements in order to complete their projects
  • Providing support to P2/engagement processes
  • Technical experts
  • Overseeing P2/engagement conducted by others (ex. staff, contractors)

Examples include: engineers, land use planners, scientists, policy analysts and patient and family engagement practitioners

This course is NOT for those who:

  • Plan, design or implement P2/engagement plans
  • Are leading or actively involved in P2/engagement
