IAP2 CANADA ANNUAL REPORT 2022 |
Catherine Rockandel, CP3, President | A few words from the President"ENGAGEMENT IS ROOTED IN UNDERSTANDING AND INCLUSIVITY, VITAL COMPONENTS AS WE WORK TOWARDS IAP2 CANADA'S BOLD VISION..." The annual report is an opportunity for us to reflect on the successes and challenges of the past year, and acknowledge what we have heard and learned. It is an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the important and sometimes tough work of coming together with diverse perspectives to improve social, environmental, and economic outcomes, strengthen relationships, and increase trust in democratic processes. It is this work that inspires us and we drew on this wisdom in planning and hosting the successful conference in Banff, Alberta. The networking and presentations ranged from technical, to interactive, and inspiring. We heard that weaving Indigenous knowledge and teachings throughout the conference was deeply valued by participants. Engagement is rooted in understanding and inclusivity, vital components as we continue to work towards IAP2 Canada’s bold vision in the strategic plan. As such, we are committed to understanding equity, diversity and inclusion across IAP2 Canada and increasing awareness of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit (Indigenous) cultures and values through intercultural competency professional development programs. Organizational change and transformation can be very challenging, especially when we have limited resources as a small, not-for-profit association. There have been bumps in the road and although we have accomplished so much through hard work and dedication, we know from the feedback and ideas we have received from our community that there is still much work for us to do. IAP2 Canada’s brand recognition continues to grow with many organizations across Canada requiring their staff and consultants to have taken IAP2 Foundations training program. The CP3 designation is perceived as a competitive advantage for those looking to demonstrate their skills and experience. Together, we - the members, volunteers and trainers, are the heart of IAP2 Canada. With your support and knowledge, alongside IAP2 Canada’s staff, we can continue to deliver unique value and push further toward meaningful public participation and engagement in Canada and the world. Thank you all for being a part of this incredible journey. Whether you practice community & public engagement, public participation, stakeholder engagement, and/or Indigenous engagement in Canada, IAP2 is the preeminent organization that advances the practice and supports practitioners. We are excited about what the future holds! |
A few words from the Executive Director"IT WAS A TRANSFORMATIVE YEAR WHERE WE EXPERIENCED BOTH CHALLENGES AND SUCCESSES..." This past year was my first full year with IAP2 Canada. In this report, you’ll see how we answered the needs of our audiences, adapted to the challenges we faced, and built on our vision – that Canadians are meaningfully engaged in decisions that affect them by way of purposeful public participation (P2). We hosted a successful national conference in-person and offered the content on-demand following the event to those who were not able to be in Banff for the event; invested in our people by providing equity, diversity and inclusion training; assessed the needs of the organization and engaged training and marketing experts to better meet the needs of our diverse audiences; made many improvements to our website, social media, and email communications; and launched a new Certificate in Public Participation to educate, inform, and inspire as many people as possible. It was a transformative year where we experienced both challenges and successes - we met both head-on. We accomplished a lot and will continue to build on recent momentum as we head toward 2023. This work could not have been achieved without the dedication, expertise and passion of the operational team and the volunteers: I thank each and every one of them from the bottom of my heart for taking this journey alongside me. We are committed to using the power of P2 and engagement to help people take meaningful action toward real-life challenges, deliver results that matter, and implement transformational change that lasts. The road ahead is paved with promise, and I am excited about what we can achieve together at IAP2 Canada. | Valoree McKay, CAE, Executive Director |

Biggest Challenges and Proudest Wins of 2022 |
Valoree McKay, CAEExecutive Director When I joined IAP2 Canada in November of 2021 I knew that I was stepping into one of the biggest challenges of my career however it was not a new type of challenge for me. I am no stranger to change in the association world, in fact, it has been the focus of the bulk of my career in association management. It has not been an easy year - lack of resources, people, automated systems and funds has been the biggest challenge in my view. With that said, the support and passion of the people involved in the organization is probably its biggest asset and I am grateful for the operational team and all of the volunteers that have helped us achieve what we did in 2022. I look forward to next year and beyond as we continue to grow and build IAP2 Canada, the profession and the community. | Claudia SighomnouManager, Training & Professional Development Reflecting on my first month with IAP2 Canada, the journey has been a mix of exhilarating challenges and rewarding wins. One of my proudest achievements was the successful launch of the Certificate in Public Participation, accomplished within less than a month of joining the team. This was no small feat, given that I was still familiarizing myself with the organization and its diverse training offerings. This endeavor demonstrated to me the power of a dedicated team, diligent planning, and a common vision. | Sarah AlvaradoMarketing & Communications Consultant It's been a few years since the website layout and email communications were changed, and as a result, they were becoming a bit dated and hard to navigate. I used the current website tool to create a new, updated and more modern layout for the home page and other pages on the website that are now more visually appealing and user friendly, and used the email building tool to create new templates that are more streamlined and follow brand guidelines. We've received overwhelmingly positive feedback on the updated designs, which is a win for the team! |
Research That Matters |
The IAP2 Canada Research Committee works hard to help members better understand current public participation and engagement activities in Canada. Research is focused on identifying trends, best practices and areas of innovation, and evaluating current research and publications to identify opportunities for partnership and collaboration. In 2022, the Committee commissioned and published the following report: Digital Public Participation: Practice, Challenges and Opportunities |
Thank you to our committee and program volunteers!
