Public Participation and Engagement for Senior Leaders looks at P2 and engagement from the perspective of those in leadership and decision-making roles. It explores what makes P2 and engagement meaningful, standards of practice, and the unique and critical role that senior leaders play in building a positive culture of P2 and engagement that contributes to improved results, credibility, and performance.

Course Objectives: 

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and consider how external and internal factors are impacting P2/engagement
  • Define P2 and engagement as well as related terms and what makes it unique, and consider the role of leaders in P2 and engagement
  • Identify what makes P2 and engagement meaningful, and reflect on the impacts and results of collaboration and connection
  • Explore the critical role of leaders in building trust, working with power and influence, and committing to the purpose of engagement and level of influence, through the lens of the spectrum and the Profiles of the Engagement model
  • Explore the Practice Framework to identify the role of leaders in building an engagement culture and in working with community and stakeholders
  • Explore the role of power and influence in challenging engagement contexts, and their impacts on our work and the perception of our organization
  • Identify the steps on the development continuum for a culture of P2/engagement and assess organization (s) against those steps; evidence and measures of how well we are doing.
  • Discover the role of the leader in leading culture change in communities and organizations, and practice skills and knowledge

Target Audience: 

  • Senior Leaders are: Management and Executive levels of an organization where decisions are made related to the whole of an organization and where accountability and responsibility rest. This can include the Executive team, Chief and Council, elected officials, or senior leadership of specific organizational departments.

Course Delivery:

Online and hosted by IAP2 Canada.

Our Licensed Trainer:

Tracey Ehl brings groups together to explore ideas, opportunities and issues.  She approaches public participation as a learning process, for everyone.  This is based on a belief that individual and collective learning hold great potential for positive, transformative change. 

Tracey has over two decades of professional experience in facilitation, public and stakeholder engagement, environmental communications and environmental and strategic planning.  Tracey’s energetic and attentive style has assisted communities locally and internationally to develop supported, realistic solutions and achieve shared goals. Her project involvement has focused on complex projects in the areas of energy, sustainability, public water system management, municipal planning, transportation and public transit, waste management, wastewater infrastructure, and community development.  Within these projects, Tracey has designed, led and documented hundreds of events and processes to meet the unique needs of each client and the affected stakeholder groups, while managing controversy, outrage and budget limitations, multiple agendas and influences beyond the project.
